Torrington Dental Practice’s newly refurbished and expanded practice has been officially unveiled as part of our going commitment to expand access to outstanding dental care across Devon.
At an open evening in Halsdon Terrace on Tuesday 19 November, we revealed four new state-of-the-art surgeries (bringing the total to eight), a new Oral Health Education Suite, and spacious and calming new reception and waiting areas offering enhanced disability access.
Among the attendees were the Mayor of Great Torrington, Keeley Allin; Labour Councillor and parliamentary candidate for Torrington and West Devon, Siobhan Strode; and the former director of NHS commissioning responsible for dentistry in the South West, Andrew Harris.
The expansion of the practice is timely, with dentistry back on the political agenda after years of neglect. In his role as Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), TDP partner Ian Mills has been vocal in his support for more investment in NHS dentistry, particularly in rural areas. Responding to a recent BBC report that an estimated 2 million adults in England are unable to see an NHS Dentist, he commented:
“Successive governments have been reluctant to acknowledge that problems exist in NHS dentistry, let alone address the underlying issues. Unfortunately, many patients struggle to access NHS dental care as the funding simply does not provide the universal offer they expect, and others stay away due to patient charges which have risen by 36% since 2010. The number of adults in England seeing an NHS dentist every two years has now declined to 50%, and only 60% of children see an NHS dentist each year. While access could be improved through better allocation of existing resources, truly universal access could only be achieved with greater funding.”
Established in 1999, Torrington Dental Practice is an independent, community-based practice with a national reputation for clinical excellence. We are a leading referral centre for implant and complex dentistry patients from Devon, Cornwall and beyond.
Our sedation team treats over 300 patients a year on referral from other practices in the area and has been recognised nationally for the service they provide under the NHS, helping anxious patients of all ages to overcome their dental fears and phobias.
TDP’s Oral Health Education team also play a vital role in promoting good oral health to the wider community, taking the message into schools, care homes and other vulnerable groups on a regular basis.
Reflecting on TDP’s skills and expertise Practice Manager Toni Batty says: “Outside of the cities, it is unusual to find a dental practice with such a highly qualified and experienced team of dental surgeons, practitioners and support staff. Thanks to our global connections in research and academia we know what outstanding dentistry looks like and are determined to deliver it in Devon.”
“At the same time, we understand the anxieties that many people have about visiting the dentist and are incredibly proud of our reputation for putting patients at ease. We hope our bright and welcoming new facilities and friendly team will encourage more patients to visit on a regular basis so that we can deliver the finest standards of care to even more people.”
I have always felt confident with the level of care and skill all the staff at the dental practice show. I can honestly say it is by far the best dentist I have been to – which is why I keep coming back.
