AESTHETIC AND COSMETIC DENTISTRY
AESTHETIC AND COSMETIC DENTISTRY TREATMENTS TO MAKE YOU SMILE
Torrington Dental Practice offers a range of specialist aesthetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry treatments.
Cosmetic Dentistry, sometimes called Aesthetic Dentistry, refers to any dental work designed to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile, and sometimes the functionality of your teeth, gums, and bite.
Are you embarrassed by discoloured, crooked, chipped, or missing teeth and want to be able to smile with confidence? We provide a range of treatments to help you. We treat every patient on an individual basis and deliver personalised care to ensure the best possible results.
To determine the best dentistry treatment for you, we consider the condition of your teeth and gums and what you want to achieve. We clearly explain the options available and only present those treatments which are suitable. To help fund more expensive cosmetic dentistry, we also provide % finance packages to help you bring forward and spread the cost of your treatment.

ORTHODONTICS
Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry that falls under both aesthetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry, focusing on correcting the position of the teeth and jaws to achieve a healthy and attractive smile.”
Orthodontics can be used alone to align crooked teeth & improve a smile or to position teeth to allow other dentistry to be more successful e.g. providing optimal space for a bridge or implant.
Typically, Orthodontics is carried out on children once their adult teeth have erupted, approximately 11-12 years old. There are, however, a few exceptions where early treatment is undertaken in order to help minimise developing problems or stop potential problems from developing altogether.
Although typically carried out on children, orthodontic treatment can be very successfully carried out on adults and there is no upper age limit for treatment, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy, with the result that more and more adults are undertaking treatment.
Potentially, all patients up to the age of 18 are eligible for an orthodontic assessment under the NHS; treatment, however, is restricted to the more severe problems.
Very minor problems, although not treatable under NHS, can be treated privately.
TYPES OF BRACES USED AT TORRINGTON DENTAL PRACTICE
- fixed braces (railway tracks)
- functional braces
Fixed braces
Most orthodontic treatment is undertaken using fixed braces (railway tracks). These braces involve a small metal attachment (bracket) ‘glued’ to each individual tooth, these brackets are then linked together by a wire. Most commonly these braces are made of metal but tooth coloured braces are available for private patients.

COMPOSITE BONDING/VENEERS
Composite bonding is a modern way to restore worn or damaged teeth.
This cosmetic dentistry treatment involves bonding tooth-coloured filling material to teeth to restore them to their original form and function.
Composite bonding is a very conservative method of treatment as it requires none or minor tooth preparation.
The use of modern material has made this a very successful treatment option and carries much less risk to the tooth compared to conventional crowns.
In terms of aesthetic changes to front teeth – composite is largely used in two ways.
- Edge Bonding – adding composite to the biting edge of a front tooth. Generally to make the teeth appear longer and more uniform. Often to address chipping/thinning.
- Composite Veneers – adding composite to the whole front surface of the tooth. This can enhance the overall shape & appearance of the whole tooth.
A veneer is a thin tooth-coloured shell placed on the front of a tooth to improve the appearance of discoloured, irregularly shaped or damaged teeth. They are usually fitted to the front upper and lower teeth, and made from ceramic, porcelain or a composite material.
Veneers offer a minimally invasive way to transform a tooth as only a very thin layer of enamel is removed (if any) prior to fitting.
Treatment steps:
- If necessary, a tiny layer of enamel is removed from the surface of the tooth to accommodate the veneer.
- Once the tooth has been prepared, impressions are taken so a customised veneer can be manufactured. The colour of your teeth is also noted so it will blend in perfectly.
- The veneer is bonded to your tooth with a strong dental adhesive.
Veneers are tough restorations but they can be damaged if not treated with care. Cut up hard foods before eating and do not open anything with your teeth, such as crisp packets or bottles, and avoid biting your nails or chewing pencils. In addition to these precautions, make sure you practice good oral hygiene and see your dentist regularly.

Longevity
Longevity is very much dependent on the care taken with them, oral hygiene & habits. Black coffee, smoking, and inconsistent toothbrushing tend to lead to stains building up more quickly. Grinding teeth or biting on hard objects (like pen lids/hairclips) may result in wear and chipping.
- Composite veneers – 5yrs
- Edge bonding – 7yrs
- Ceramic veneers likely to need replacement after 10-15 years

TEETH WHITENING
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry treatment that involves lightening the colour of a tooth. Even patients with excellent oral hygiene can suffer from some discolouration of their teeth. To allow the process to work, a mould of your teeth is taken, and the lab technician will construct custom-made trays to hold the whitening agent.
Teeth whitening trays are normally worn for 2-3 hours a day every evening until the desired colour change is achieved. Instructions for this process will be given to you by your dentist, and regular review appointments will be made to check the progress of the whitening.
Teeth whitening usually requires two appointments at the practice, and prices start from £407.00
