Our guide to dental examinations
Dental examinations, often referred to as check-ups, are routine appointments designed to evaluate the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth. These check-ups help in the early detection and prevention of dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer.
NEW PATIENT DENTAL EXAMINATIONS
As a new patient we will spend time with you to discuss the reasons you have joined our practice. We will discuss your previous dental experiences and treatments and any concerns you may have.
To begin with, we will undertake a thorough examination to determine the presence of tooth decay, gum disease, wear or erosion, effectiveness of your tooth and gum cleaning and other mouth conditions affecting your cheeks and tongue.
Radiographs will be taken unless they were taken recently elsewhere.

Any conditions found will be discussed with you and a plan of treatment outlined to you. You will have an opportunity to discuss treatment options with your dentist at this time. You will also be provided with an estimate for treatment.
Please email us on reception@torringtondental.co.uk or call 01805 623657 to find out if we’re currently taking on new patients. For all new patients a reservation payment is taken at the time of booking to secure the appointment in our diary.
ROUTINE RECALL
During your routine examination, your mouth will be checked for signs of dental disease. These may include tooth decay, gum disease, tooth wear or erosion, and other conditions affecting your cheeks or tongue. In addition, we’ll assess how effectively your teeth and gums are being cleaned.
If needed, Radiographs may be taken to give a clearer picture of your overall oral health.
After the examination, we’ll talk through any concerns you may have and agree on a treatment plan. Together, we’ll find the best way to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums going forward.

DENTAL EXAMINATIONS FOR COMPLEX CASES
Full case assessment
During a full case assessment, we’ll take time to understand why you’ve been referred to us for more complex treatment. We’ll then carry out a thorough examination to check for tooth decay, gum disease, wear, erosion, and any conditions affecting your tongue or cheeks.
Following this, we will then focus on the specific reason for your referral and explore it in more detail. This often includes X-rays, dental impressions for study models, photographs, and a detailed assessment of your bite. These steps help us fully understand your concerns and plan the most appropriate treatment.

If the case is complex, you will normally receive a written report detailing the findings and any recommended treatment options, along with an estimate of treatment costs. Once the report has been received, you will have an opportunity to discuss treatment options with your dentist before any treatment begins.
