Led by Rhys Gabe and Sammy Holt, our anxious patient team is recognised as experts in the field. Many patients come to us on referral from other dentists across Devon and the South West. We are proud to say that our patients feel comfortable and confident enough to come back on a regular basis.

I come here as i’m a very anxious patient and I can’t rate them enough! I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Amazing with anxious patients! ⭐

Brilliant dental practice, I was referred there for being a nervous patient who needed sedation and with their kindness and support over the years I am able to have treatments done without it. Sammy and the team are excellent 👍

Conscious Sedation For Dental Anxiety

Depending on your level of dental anxiety or phobia, you may require treatment with some form of sedation. Dental or ‘conscious’ sedation doesn’t put you to sleep like a general anaesthetic. Concious sedation puts you into a deeply relaxed state.

As the name suggests, you are conscious throughout the treatment and able to talk with your dentist.

The most common forms of sedation are:

  • Inhalation sedation
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation

Inhalation sedation

Inhalation sedation involves breathing in a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This is administered via a small mask placed just over your nose. It makes you feel calm and happy and is suitable for both adults and children.

Intravenous (IV) sedation

Sedation is administered through a vein in your hand or arm. It makes you feel sleepy and helps you to remain relaxed during your appointment.

Before you start your treatment, we will see you for an assessment appointment. This appointment allows you to get to know us and share your concerns. During your appointment, we will discuss the treatment options available to you. This allows us to provide you with the best care based on your individual requirements.

Referrals

Whether you’re a patient at the practice or a patient registered elsewhere, you can be referred for sedation.  Referrals can be made both on the NHS and privately for the required course of treatment.

Please speak to your dentist if you feel you will require sedation for any dental treatment.

FAQ's for patients with dental anxiety

How do you support nervous dental patients?
Our team is specially trained to care for nervous and anxious dental patients. We listen carefully, explain each step clearly, never rush appointments, and work at each person’s pace to create a safe and calm environment.
How do you help patients feel more relaxed during dental treatment?
We focus on kindness from the moment patients arrive. A friendly welcome, gentle communication, clear explanations and regular breaks all help reduce anxiety. Some patients choose to bring someone with them for support. Often, small adjustments make a big difference.
What sedation options do you offer for patients suffering from dental anxiety?
Sedation can make longer or more complex dental treatment feel much easier. It helps patients feel relaxed and less aware of what is happening. We offer inhalation sedation (gas and air) and IV sedation where appropriate. However, for many people, simply taking extra time and providing reassurance is enough. All care is tailored to the individual.
What feedback do nervous dental patients give after treatment?
Many patients say they cannot believe how comfortable the experience felt and wish they had come sooner. For some, overcoming dental anxiety is life-changing. They move from avoiding the dentist for years to feeling confident about returning for regular care.
Why is dental anxiety support important on the NHS?
Dental anxiety is very common. Providing this service on the NHS means patients can access safe, compassionate and comfortable dental care regardless of their circumstances.
Can I have a general anaesthetic for dental treatment?

General Anaesthetic, or being put to sleep, is only available in a hospital setting. Conscious sedation is the best option for dental treatment without having to go to hospital.

Can I eat and drink before my dental appointment?

Most patients can have a light meal a couple of hours before their treatment appointment, but this will be discussed with you at your assessment appointment.

Can I bring someone with me to my dental appointment?

You may wish or need to bring someone with you to your appointments for emotional support. We actively support this.

If you feel conscious sedation is the best method of treatment, then you will require an escort to attend with you. The requirements for this will be fully discussed with you at your assessment appointment.

What would you say to someone too anxious to book a dental appointment?
The first step is often the hardest. Once you book, we will take things at your pace, without judgment. Our role is simply to support you and help you feel comfortable throughout your treatment.
