Award Winning Dentist in Devon Recognised for Excellence in Patient Care and Professional Leadership
At Torrington Dental Practice, we are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of Ian Mills, a highly respected dentist in Devon who has received one of the most prestigious honours in UK dentistry.
Ian became the first ever recipient of the College Medal — the highest honour awarded by the College of General Dentistry. Reserved for exceptional contributions to the profession, the medal is awarded to no more than one individual each year.
This prestigious recognition reflects Ian’s dedication to patient care, his leadership within dentistry both locally and nationally, and his ongoing contribution to advancing clinical standards across the profession.
A Career Dedicated to Dentistry
Ian qualified from Glasgow University in 1987 before beginning his career in maxillofacial surgery. After moving to Devon in 1994, he established Torrington Dental Practice in 1997 with a vision of delivering high-quality, patient-focused dental care for the local community.
Today, the practice has grown into an eight-surgery mixed NHS and private practice caring for patients across Great Torrington and the surrounding areas.
With more than 30 years of experience in dentistry, Ian has developed particular expertise in restorative dentistry and dental implants, alongside a strong focus on advanced treatment planning and long-term oral health.
Alongside treating patients, he has also lectured internationally, mentored other dental professionals and contributed extensively to postgraduate education within dentistry.
Leadership Within the Dental Profession
Ian has held several influential leadership positions throughout his career. He served as Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice UK and played a key role in establishing the College of General Dentistry itself.
He has also worked with Peninsula Dental School since its creation and completed a PhD focused on person-centred dental care — reflecting his long-standing commitment to improving patient experience, treatment outcomes and standards within dentistry.
His professional interests include quality improvement, equality and diversity within dentistry, and the future sustainability of dental care.
Through both his clinical work and wider leadership roles, Ian has become widely recognised as an award winning dentist in Devon with influence across the profession.
Supporting Dentistry During the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the coronavirus pandemic, Ian played a leading role in helping dental practices across the UK reopen safely and continue caring for patients.
He chaired a forward-planning group involving more than 30 organisations across the dental profession to rapidly develop guidance for the safe return of dental services during one of the most challenging periods dentistry has faced.
This work became an important national resource for practices and patients alike, further strengthening Ian’s reputation as an award winning dentist in Devon.
