Dental referrals are a crucial aspect of patient care in dentistry.
They involve a primary care dentist directing a patient to a specialist for advanced treatment beyond the general practitioner’s expertise. This process ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care for complex dental issues, following GDC professional standards for referral arrangements.
General dental referrals
General referrals include referrals for specialist dental treatments such as oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and prosthodontics.

Sedation Dental referrals
At Torrington Dental Practice, we offer conscious dental sedation to both NHS and Private patients. The most common forms of sedation are:
- Inhalation sedation
- This involves breathing in a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen via a small mask placed just over your nose. It makes you feel calm and happy and is suitable for both adults and children.
- Intravenous (IV) sedation
- This is administered through a vein in your hand or arm. It makes you feel sleepy and helps you to remain relaxed during your appointment.
To refer a patient to us for sedation, you must complete the following forms below either online (fully encrypted) or via email:
- Referral Form
- Medical Questionnaire (the TDP Medical History Form is tailored specifically for Sedation Patients, and we must therefore receive this version)
- Patient Declaration (signed by both referring clinician AND patient).
ALL FORMS must be completed in their entirety using the online forms below, or downloaded and sent to us at admin@torringtondental.co.uk with all relevant x-rays. If anything is missing, it will need to be requested, which will hold up the referral further.

Periodontology Referrals
At Torrington Dental Practice, we have our gum disease expert, Shaun Hodge, who has a special interest in periodontology and Implant Dentistry.
Shaun welcomes referrals for the management of periodontal disease and for dental implants. He prides himself on providing evidence-based, patient-centred care while maintaining a collaborative and respectful approach to professional relationships. His philosophy is to use the least invasive approach possible, offering both non-surgical and surgical treatment tailored to each patient’s needs.
Successful management of periodontitis depends on clear communication and teamwork. On referral, an initial consultation report is provided to both the patient and the referring dentist. Where extractions or restorative work are required, these can either be completed by the referring dentist or by clinicians at Torrington Dental, depending on your preference.
At the end of treatment, a full report is sent outlining the outcomes achieved and recommendations for ongoing maintenance. Shaun values the trust of his colleagues and always ensures patients are returned to their own dentist for continuing care.
