DEVON DENTAL IMPLANT CENTRE
Devon Dental Implant Centre – Trusted Implant Specialists in North Devon
The Devon Dental Implant Centre was launched within Torrington Dental Practice further to the practice providing dental implant services for over 20 years to patients in Devon, Cornwall and beyond. During that time, we have placed over 3,000 implants, with patients referred from more than 70 regional practices.
We’re proud of our reputation as one of the UK’s top implant practices, but we’re conscious that not many people in Devon know it! So, we launched Devon Dental Implant Centre within Torrington Dental Practice to highlight our implant expertise and provide a clearer signpost to our practice for those in need of treatment.
“More and more people with missing teeth or ill-fitting plates are choosing implants as they are the closest thing to your natural teeth,” says Practice Manager Toni Batty. “However, implant dentistry is a complex dental skill, and many dentists who offer it have not necessarily undergone formal training, nor do they have professional implant qualifications.”
The Devon Dental Implant Team
Devon Dental Implant Centre is led by Professor Ian Mills, one of the Southwest’s most experienced Implantologists. Ian holds a Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He combines his role at Torrington Dental Practice with his responsibilities as Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and Honorary Associate Professor at Peninsula Dental School.
Other team members include Rhys Gabe, who has a master’s degree in Restorative Dentistry.
Although our dentists have many letters after their names, they couldn’t be more friendly and caring! If you are at all nervous about the treatment, rest assured that we are experienced in treating anxious patients and incredibly proud of our reputation for putting patients at ease.
To learn more about the benefits of implants and the treatment offered by Devon Dental Implant Centre, why not book a free, half-hour consultation?
“We treat every patient on an individual basis and will only offer you implants if we believe they are right for you” explains Ian. “If not, we have a wide range of alternative treatment options available.”

HOW DENTAL IMPLANTS CAN HELP YOU
- Improve your comfort and self-esteem – Dental implants are a natural looking and predictable solution for missing or failing teeth. And they don’t slip, click or rub your mouth like ill-fitting plates or dentures, so you can eat your favourite foods, talk naturally, and smile confidently.
- Maintain a more youthful appearance – When a tooth is lost the surrounding bone begins to shrink. If it is not stopped, this erosion can spread over time, causing further tooth loss and giving your face a ‘sunken’ look.
Implants preserve your facial structure by integrating with the jawbone. This stimulates growth when you bite and chew helping you to maintain a more youthful appearance. A bridge or denture will not necessarily preserve your bone.
- Preserve your existing teeth – Having an implant does not impact on your existing teeth – unlike a bridge which often requires healthy teeth on each side of the gap to be ground down to support the bridge.
- A secure long-term investment – Implants are a predictable, long term solution to tooth loss and can last a lifetime if you look after them. By comparison bridges, crowns and dentures often need replacing every 7-10 years, and can cause damage to your remaining teeth.

YOUR IMPLANT PLAN
Free Consultation
Every patient enquiring about treatment at our Devon Dental Implant centre is offered a free half-hour consultation. During your consultation, we will discuss your suitability for implants, how they can help you, and what other treatment options are available. You are under no obligation to proceed with the implants at this stage.
Assessment
Should you decide to go ahead with treatment, you will be invited for a detailed assessment and examination to discuss the best options for your individual needs. Our state-of-the-art 3D-CT scanner will help us to determine the quality and quantity of bone you have in your jaw and visualise the optimal positioning for your implants.
Hygiene treatment
Periodontal (gum) disease can be a significant risk in implant failure. Depending on the health of your gums we may advise a programme of gum treatment and oral hygiene instruction to stabilise the situation prior to implant treatment. Our hygienists will assist you with this if necessary.
Surgery
During surgery, the titanium implant is carefully inserted, and a small temporary button is placed on top. We usually carry out this procedure under local anaesthetic, however we are very sensitive to the needs of anxious patients and can offer sedation where necessary.
Healing
Once the implant has been placed it is normally allowed to heal undisturbed for approximately eight weeks during which time the implant fuses with the bone, a process known as “Osseo-integration”. During this period, you may be fitted with a temporary tooth or teeth.
New tooth placement
When your implant has healed an internal post or ‘abutment’ is placed into the implant. This allows your new tooth/teeth to be fitted. For a single tooth implant, a crown will be made to match the size, shape and colour of your natural teeth. For more than one tooth, a custom-made bridge or denture will be made to fit your mouth and blend in with your other teeth.
After-care
After care is vital to ensure successful, long-lasting implants. Our hygienists can advise you on the correct tools and techniques to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. It is important that you see your own dentist and hygienist on a regular basis to ensure the implants are being well looked after.
We also advise that you return to see the Implantologist at the Devon Dental Implant Centre after twelve months to allow us to assess your implants, gums and general hygiene levels.
About our Devon dental implant centre
Devon Dental Implant Centre is part of the Torrington Dental Practice with its own dedicated surgery, private consultation room and relaxed and comfortable waiting area.
Our surgeries are equipped to the highest standards with the latest imaging technology, sterilisation procedures and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure we can offer you the safest and highest quality care possible.
In 2015, we installed one of the first low-dose Gendex CT scanners in the UK. This 3D X-ray machine has dose reduction technology, which allows us to take 3D CT images of your jaws with much lower radiation dosages than was previously possible.
Renowned for its exceptional quality and reliability, we use the Straumann® Dental implant System. It is one of the most extensively scientifically documented implant systems in the world. Straumann is also recognised for its outstanding role in the education and training of dental professionals in more than 70 countries. Using this system helps to ensure that our patients always benefit from the very latest advances in implant treatment.
Devon Dental Implant Costs
At first glance implant treatment appears to be more expensive than other options such as dentures or bridges. However, when you consider the longevity of the treatment, and the long-term health of your mouth, it is almost always a wise option, which will prove to be very cost-effective over time.
The fee list below gives you an indication of the typical investment involved in a range of treatments. This should be viewed as a guide, as each patient has individual needs. A detailed report with an exact cost of treatment is given to each patient before proceeding.
Ask about our finance options.
Devon Dental Implant Centre offers a range of finance options, so that you can have the treatment you need right now and spread the costs. With our 0% finance plan, you won’t end up paying any more than you would in cash.

YOUR DENTAL IMPLANT QUESTIONS ANSWERED
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Dental implants are a natural-looking, long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. The implant itself is a metal (usually titanium) screw which is placed directly into your jawbone as a substitute for your missing tooth root.
The surface of the implant is specially treated to stimulate bone growth so that your bone gradually fuses to the implant, holding it firmly in place. Once secured in your upper or lower jaw, the implant can be used to securely support a crown, a bridge or a denture, depending on your needs.
The current technique was developed more than 50 years ago and is a highly successful procedure.
WHAT BENEFITS DO THEY OFFER?
Implants can offer significant health and lifestyle benefits, improving patient self-esteem, comfort and long-term oral health. Implants can last a lifetime compared to 5-10 years for fixed bridges, and they don’t require adjacent healthy teeth to be ground down.
They are fixed in place, unlike denture plates, which can be embarrassing to remove and clean. They alleviate many of the problems commonly associated with ill-fitting dentures, such as sore gums, slipping and clicking, which can cause problems with eating and talking. And unlike bridges and dentures, they prevent bone loss, helping you to maintain a more youthful appearance.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DENTAL IMPLANT AND A TOOTH SUPPORTED BRIDGE?
Implants are permanently placed into your jawbone to hold your false tooth or dentures securely in place.
Bridges literally ‘bridge’ the gap created by one or more missing teeth, using your adjacent teeth to anchor your false tooth or teeth. Unlike implants, bridges don’t require surgery, however they may require healthy adjacent teeth to be filed down to support the bridge.
Devon Dental Implant Centre will discuss both treatments fully with you and help you decide on the best option for you.
CAN ANYONE HAVE AN IMPLANT?
Dental implants are suitable for most people over the age of 21 who are in good general health and have enough bone to receive the implant. They are not suitable for children and teenagers whose bones are still growing.
If you have gum (periodontal) disease it must be treated before the implants are placed. If you don’t have enough bone in your jaw to anchor the implants, it can usually be rebuilt using a procedure called bone augmentation. Some medical conditions may preclude implants.
Devon Dental Implant Centre will carry out a thorough assessment to ensure your suitability for treatment.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN AN IMPLANT DENTIST?
Implant dentistry is a specialised dental skill, so it may surprise you to learn that many dentists who offer implants have not undergone formal training and do not have formal qualifications.
Mistakes can result in permanent damage, so it is vital to do your research. Questions to ask include:
- ‘What are your qualifications?’ (Look for a dentist with a Diploma or MSc in Implant Dentistry);
- ‘How many implants have you placed?’;
- ‘How long have you been doing the procedure?’; and
- ‘What is your success rate?’ More complex cases may require advanced procedures such as bone grafting and sinus surgery, so find out if the dentist has the skills to handle these treatments.
You can meet the team and check out their qualifications above..
ARE IMPLANTS SAFE?
Implants have been used for decades and are one of the most predictable and reliable replacements for missing teeth. As with all minor surgery, the procedure is not without risk, but complications are rare and can generally be managed effectively.
For peace of mind make sure your dentist is a qualified and experienced implantologist.
IS IT PAINFUL TO HAVE IMPLANTS?
The procedure itself shouldn’t hurt, although you may experience some swelling or discomfort afterwards. During surgery you will be given a local anaesthetic or, should you require it, sedation.
Rhys Gabe, our clinical lead in sedation at Devon Dental Implant Centre, has a special interest in treating anxious patients and has a well-earned reputation for putting our patients at ease.
HOW LONG DO IMPLANTS LAST?
At Devon Dental Implant Centre, we use the Straumann dental implant system, which is renowned for its exceptional quality and reliability.
Such high-quality implants can last a lifetime if they are correctly placed and you maintain a good oral health regime.
Stopping smoking will considerably increase the success and longevity of your implant treatment. Smoking can affect the healing process and may be bad for the long-term health of the gum and bone surrounding the implant.
The other critical factor is the health of your gums. Implants can suffer from gum disease, the same as teeth, and it is vitally important that this is assessed properly before treatment.
HOW SHOULD I LOOK AFTER MY IMPLANTS?
Although your new teeth won’t decay, it is important to look after them and the surrounding gums as you would your natural teeth.
Poor oral hygiene leading to gum disease (peri-implantitis) is the most common cause of implant failure. Our hygienists at Devon Dental Implant Centre can advise you on a good oral health regime and recommend you make six-monthly visits for hygiene treatment.
SHOULD I TRAVEL ABROAD TO GET DENTAL IMPLANTS? WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Every year, many Brits consider travelling abroad for implant treatment, attracted by the lower costs; however, this can be a false economy.
British dentists are regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC) and are required to have the appropriate indemnity insurance. If your treatment goes wrong outside the UK, you will have little legal recourse to recover the money and may have to return to the clinic, incurring additional treatment and travel expenses.
Successful implants also require good communication and after-care and both may be lacking from an overseas dentist. For more information, read this General Dental Council Guide on Going Abroad for your Dental Care, or speak to a member of our team at Devon Dental Implant Centre.
