Everybody deserves great dental care, but nowadays, it’s not so easy to find, especially away from the big cities. In recent weeks, TDP partner Ian Mills has been reminding us why, when it comes to outstanding dentistry, Great Torrington is well and truly on the map.
On June 14th, Professor Ian Mills was re-elected Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) (UK) for his second year in office. Part of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Faculty is the only professional membership body in the UK specifically for general dental practitioners and dental care professionals. Their role within dentistry is to improve the standard of care delivered to patients through standard setting, postgraduate training and assessment, education and research. As Dean, Ian will be leading the FGDP (UK) during a historic period as they establish an independent Royal College of General Dentistry.
Further recognition followed for Ian last month, when he was accorded the honorary title of Associate Professor in General Dental Practice by the University of Plymouth. Ian received this prestigious honour in recognition of his services to Peninsula Dental School, where he recently completed his doctoral thesis, and to General Dental Practice at a local and national level.
In fact, such is Ian’s reputation that on 23 July, he was invited to Westminster to attend a Health Select Committee hearing at the Houses of Parliament as part of a select group discussing the future of dentistry. The Committee is chaired by Devon MP Dr Sarah Wollaston. Ian took the opportunity to remind its members of the challenges facing patients trying to access NHS care in rural areas and highlight the growing inequality in oral health within the UK.
