Rhys qualified from University of Wales College of Medicine and Dentistry in 1996.
He worked in South Wales and Bristol undertaking a minor oral surgery post-graduate placement in Cardiff Dental School before moving to Torrington Dental Practice in 2004.
Restorative Dentistry
Rhys has a special interest in Restorative dentistry. He is an Associate Specialist in Restorative dentistry with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, treating head and neck cancer patients, trauma, and complex restorative cases. He has worked alongside Ian Mills and the implant team for the past 10 years and specialises in complex cases with multiple problems.
Rhys was awarded an MSc in Restorative Dentistry with distinction from Peninsula Medical and Dental School in 2018. He is the current Treasurer of the British Society of Restorative Dentistry (BSRD) and an Associate Fellow of the College of General Dentistry.
Rhys prides himself on being approachable to patients and believes that a patient-centred approach to treatment planning and discussion is essential.
Anxious Patients
Rhys also has a special interest in the treatment of anxious patients. He undertook further training in the use of dental sedation and behavioural techniques and was awarded the prestigious Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation from Newcastle Dental School in 2009. Under Rhys’s leadership, TDP’s dental sedation referral service has been commissioned by NHS England to provide care for anxious patients in Devon while also taking private referrals from across the south-west of England.
Hobbies
Outside work, Rhys is married with two children. He has been a semi-professional trumpet player and enjoys sport, playing rugby longer than he should have! He is a junior rugby coach with Barnstaple Rugby Club.
